September 2010 SDA Newsletter

WORKSHOPS:

*Jorie Johnson, felter extraordinaire, will be in San Francisco! She will be teaching a 2 day version of her "Feltmaker's Bag of Tricks" for SDA members and guests which will include one day of motif exercises (concepts that make 2-D felt fabrics have more surface) followed by a one day where we take this surface experimentation into the 3-D form producing a small shifted shape vessel or pouch. The workshop will be held on October 23rd & 24th at The Art Institute of California-San Francisco, 1170 Market Street.
Cost of the class is $250 for SDA members, $225 for AI students and $280 for guests.

MEMBER NEWS

Jeanne Aird had an exhibit of her art quilts at the Paso Robles City Library in August. It was a culmination of work created for her master’s degree in Art Education.

Ellen Brook has had her painting "Watermarks II" chosen as one of 13 paintings featured on the cover of the San Francisco Open Studios Guide. The painting is mixed media on silk. Sandra Ericson: Many surface designers need more skills in draping and designing clothing with their fabrics in order to market a product and have it stand out in a crowded field. The Center for Pattern Design offers a Draping Series of a wide variety of couture styling to provide a range of draping skills to both beginners and professionals. Linda Gass, an artist in residence at Cubberley Studios who makes art about water issues in California is a participant in "San Francisco Bay: Where Art, Science and Environment Meet" on September 16th, 7-8:30pm at the Palo Alto Center Auditorium, 1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto. Admission is free. It will be engaging evening of images and conversation examining the past, present and future of San Francisco Bay; a look at how the disciplines of art and science inform and inspire one another while addressing the impact of climate change, wetlands restoration and pollution. Can art play a vital role in furthering our understanding and response?

Lara Magruder: The 2010 "Pushing the Limits: New Expressions in Hooked Art" competition for contemporary hooked rugs has selected Bay Area SDA member, Lara Magruder's rug "Bees Missing" for inclusion in this year's catalog. Each year Newtown Hooked Art Shows selects the work of artists who use traditional rug hooking techniques in contemporary and non-traditional work. Newtown Hooked Art Shows hosts a juried competition annually to promote and display current interpretations of hooked rug techniques throughout the US and Canada. Chris Motley will be having a piece in the Marin MOCA show 'Speaking of Solitude,' the gallery's sixth national juried exhibition which will be showing now through October 3rd. The show was juried this year by Marie Medua, Director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Rental Gallery. Chris also had a piece in the show 'Faces and Figures' at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto which was juried by René de Guzman.
The Pixeladies (Deb Cashatt and Kris Sazaki) have two pieces in the International Quilt Festival Houston November 4-7, 2010. You can find "Fault Line" and "War in Black and White" in a special exhibit entitled "Text on Textiles 2010."

Carol Lee Shanks will be showing her newest work at the Marketplace during the Textile Society of America’s 12 Biennial Symposium in Lincoln, Nebraska, October 7-9 at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel downtown Lincoln. Bonnie J. Smith’s work “Waves” is currently at the Milton Marks Conference Center Gallery, 455 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco thru October 10, 2010. Hours are Monday thru Friday, 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Bonnie’s work “Blue Waters” will be exhibited at the Coastal Art League & Museum thru October 3, 2010, Zaballa Square, 300 Main Street HMB, Ca. 94019. Her art work “What to say on racism?” will be on display at the Facing Race Conference, Sept. 23 thru 25, Chicago, IL. At the IQF Houston, Texas her work “View From Above” will be in the 500 Art Quilt Exhibit.


CALL TO FIBER ARTISTS:

SEBASTOPOL: Sebastopol Center for the Arts invites artists to submit work to Innovations in Fiberart V. Open to all artists living in the United States. Work submitted for this exhibition envisions thought-provoking, unconventional and innovative fiber artworks expressed in a range of materials. Organic, inorganic, as well as recycled materials can be used. Works can be 2- or 3-dimensional, and of multiple techniques. The exhibition opens with a reception on Thursday, October 28, and runs through December 4, 2010.
Juror, Melissa Leventon, founding partner of Curatrix Group museum consultants, is a specialist in European and American textiles. She was formerly Curator-in-Charge of Textiles at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and has authored many exhibition catalogues, books, and journals. She teaches fashion history and theory at California College of the Arts. Melissa has been a consultant to numerous institutions, and currently is working with The Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in Bangkok. She received her BA from Brandeis Univ. and her MA in Art History/History of Dress from the Courtauld Inst. of Art, Univ. of London.
Hand-delivered entries will be accepted at SCA on Monday, October 11, between 3 and 6 pm. Entries by jpegs on CD must arrive by 5 pm, on or by that date. Please see prospectus for complete guidelines.
Entry fees are: SCA members, $10 per entry or 3 entries for $25 (membership is $40 annually), Nonmembers, $15 per entry, or 3 entries for $40. Maximum, 3 entries per artist. Awards: $200 Best of Show; $50 Coordinators Award, and Merit Awards.
