ARTWEAR at the de Young:
Meet the artists and shop the best of Bay Area wearable art at ARTWEAR at the de Young.  Select from an array of unique textiles, jewelry and accessories. Surface Design Exhibit:

“The Santa Cruz Art League’s Fiber Art, Crossroads: All Media”.
"Crossroads" celebrates the diversity within the contemporary Fiber Arts movement. HOLLY BADGLEY:
Holly is part of a consortium of Indy designers who do a pop-up show twice a year in Mill Valley.  Fun, inventive, artisanal, cutting edge clothing, sculptural jewelry and handbags . ALICE BEASLEY:
 Alice Beasley 's work "No Hard Hats Required" received a Juror's Choice Award in the national juried exhibition, "Consequences" at the Arc Gallery in San Francisco from May 12 through June 2, 2012.  Opening Reception is May 12 at 7 - 10 pm. Closing Reception and Artist Talk will be June 2, noon to 2 p.m.  The Gallery is located at 1246 Folsom St. in San Francisco, 415 298-7969.

Holly will be teaching a class in Italy, "Design, Stitch and Color the Abruzzo Region" June 12-18, 2013 at the Abruzzo School of Creative Art.  The school is east of Rome and close to the Adriatic.  Included will be screen printing, discharging and hand stitching.  Those registering before November 1, 2012 will receive a 30% discount. DEB CASHATT and KRIS SAZAKI:
Deb Cashatt and Kris Sazaki, better known as the Pixeladies, have just
published their first book, Furoshiki Fabric Wraps: Simple - Reusable -
Beautiful (C&T Publishing 2012 - ISBN 1607054337). They have a modern
take on the Japanese tradition of fabric wrapping. Furoshiki is like
origami but for fabric. The book has instructions for 20 different
wraps, including the popular double wine bottle wrap. Special to the
book are the chapters on designing your own furoshiki, the tear-out
instruction cards, and the artists' gallery, which includes SDA members
Judith Content, Carol Larson, Noelle Tamborini-Olson, and Sandra Wagner.

JEAN CACICEDO:

CHRISTINA CONKLIN:
In January, Christina Conklin won the Barbara Shapiro Award at the
International Shibori Symposium in Hong Kong, for her piece entitled
"Ancestor". Attending the conference, along with fellow SDA members
Jean Cacicedo, Ana Lisa Hedstrom, and more, was a great cross-cultural
experience; we were all blown away by the level of technology and
investment in the Chinese textile community. Even more exciting was
the 9-day post-conference tour to the Silk Road in NW China, where the
"mummies of Urumuqi" came to life! This fall Christina will be
starting the MFA program in textiles at California College of the Arts
in San Francisco, where she plans to explore the boundaries between
sculpture and textiles.

JUDITH CONTENT:
Judith is participating in a designer show this coming Friday and Saturday at the de Young Museum.  She would love to see you there! Judith will have many new designs: button necklaces in new colors and lengths, shibori dyed silk scarves in mosaic designs, talismans incorporating vintage spools of thread, and much more. A wonderful group of other textile and jewelry artists will be participating in this show as well. There is no charge to enter the show, which will be located in the Piazzoni Murals room on the main floor. Museum member receive 10% discount on all purchases and 20% at the museum store.  Every purchase helps support the collections and exhibitions of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.  I hope to see you there!

JOE CUNNINGHAM:
Joe Cunningham's show of six quilts called "Modern Musings" will be on display at the Craft in America Study Center in Los Angeles until June 2, 2012. The quilts are from Cunningham's recent series and include his quilt "1871," quilted robotically. Joe will performing his musical quilt show, "Joe the Quilter," at the Study Center the evening of May 19.  The show includes his major hand quilted works, six original songs and the story of Joe Headley of 18th century England.

RICHARD ELLIOTT:
Richard Elliott will teach his well-known "Image Transfer Techniques for paper, fabric and other materials" workshop through California College of the Arts Extended Ed program, in Oakland on June 16 and 17 and August 4 and 5.  http://www.cca.edu/academics/extension .

LINDA GASS:
Linda will participate in Open Studios, May 5-6, 11am-5pm, Cubberley Studios.
20 Cubberley Artists will open their studios to the public the weekend of May 5 & 6. The series is designed from vintage linens and based on a 1954 book of etiquette found on her father’s bookshelf.

MARCIA LAVINE:
Marcia Lavine will be participating in the Art at the Source open studios sponsored by Sebastopol Center for the Arts, held the first two weekend in June.

JOY LILY
How the Impressionists Felt  is an Introduction to Felting with Joy-Lily.  Blend colorful, wispy bits of wool fleece together like brushstrokes, to assemble a felted picture. Works by your favorite Impressionist: Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, Cezanne, Gauguin or even your own impressionistic art will be used as inspiration for your felt piece. Plenty of images of Impressionists works will be on hand to use during the workshop. Learn to felt your art into a solid piece of fabric that will be suitable for hanging on a wall or incorporating into clothing. Both wet felting and needle felting will be taught.

Crown Jewels Quilt Workshop will be taught by Joy on May 12th, 10:30am - 4:30pm.  Even if you've never quilted before, you can produce the four blocks for this quilt (pictured below) in a snap because you cut all 4 fabrics in a stack. Then you swap a few of the sections and you've got four different colored blocks to sew up. Using my "perfection free" sewing methods will make this workshop even more carefree.  And best of all it's FREE!  Pre-registration is required. John Marshall will have his creation, Shiodoki (Tide-Time), on display 
for the first time as one of the displays in the Instructors exhibit 
at Convergence in Long Beach. The doll features textiles dyed by John 
in wave themes, including a diminutive fisherman's robe. With surging 
waves as hair, jellyfish hair ornaments, and a base of incoming tide 
waters, she if the Goddess of Ebb and Flow.

MARILOU MOSCHETTI:
Felt Study Group Meeting and studio time:  July 21, 2012 at the Aptos Grange Hall, Aptos, CA from 10:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. - The meeting will begin with "show and tell" plus critique of past or present projects, those in progress, or UFO's. A short educational session on the "Properties of Wool", with materials gathered from the American Wool Council will follow. The remainder of the day will be for participants to make or continue a project of their choice. Bring all your own supplies and equipment, extra old towels, lunch and drinks. No formal instruction available, but shared techniques welcome. Some fine Merino wool in various colors will be available for purchase at $3 per ounce. $10 per person covers hall rental fee. JEAN NEBLETT:
Jean Neblett is an exhibitor in the 54th Annual Potrero Hill Artist's Exhibition at the Potrero Branch Library, 1616 20th Street, San Francisco, CA 415-355-2822.  The Exhibit opening is Saturday, May 5th 6-9 p.m. and the show runs through June 1st.

CAROL RHODES-WITTICH:
Our surface design group began last August.  Our second show will be Focus on Fiber, June 5 to 23, 2012.
The second Saturday & Sunday are totally involved with our gallery show plus some other activities along the way. Our third Saturday event is for the Mustard Seed School, which is for children of homeless families.  This event seemed to be a good way to give back to the community as well as provide another way to get across our mission of educating the public about fiber.

IREN ROTHENBERG:

BARBARA SHAPIRO:
Barbara Shapiro will teach a basketry class for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the Downtown SFSU campus, four Tuesdays from 1 to 4 pm, June 19 to July 10.  This is a basketry class exploring 3-D textile techniques in 4 Sessions, each including a lecture on some aspect of historic or contemporary forms and a new hands-on technique. The contemporary Art Basket movement will be studied in terms of its ancient roots and modern vision. You will look at traditional baskets as simple as the disposable leaf basket used by prehistoric man and as complex as Japanese bamboo baskets for the tea ceremony. We will explore coiling on a paper rush core; plaiting a vessel using paper strips; and hexagonal weave cane plaiting of hanging vase or book rest and more. An excellent workshop for painters, monoprinters, watercolorists, textile artists, screen printer, or anyone interested in obtaining multiples from one painted image on paper or fabric. Why labor over one painting when you can paint once and get multiples. The innovative process of polychromatic screen printing results in a limited edition from the original painted screen — with no color registration. Similar to an extended monoprint process that produces 5-8 prints from a single painted image. Students complete one print session. No solvents used. YOSHIKO IWAMOTO WADA:
 “Journey into India” on a special study program led by textile scholar, Yoshiko I. Wada, who considers this inspiring country her distant home. India has been a part of Yoshiko's life for over 30 years (she lived in Ahmedabad in the 1980s on an Education & Culture Fellowship and has continued to regularly spend a few weeks to 3-month residencies ever since).  Program highlights: back water in Kerala, hands-on natural dyeing workshop on the tea plantations, organic cotton cultivation, handloom weaving, khadi, biodynamic and sustainable farming, architecture, local food, local religion, contemporary art and design, hand spinning of wild silks and Tibetan wool in Himalayan communities and hiking through villages.  For more information visit
